Who we are
Ask Legal Matters is a free claim-review request service for people hurt in accidents. It is a lead-generation service, not a law firm: it does not give legal advice or represent anyone. Requests may be shared with independent attorneys and legal services partners who handle inquiries in the requester's state, and Ask Legal Matters may be paid by participating partners for the requests it shares with them.
Our injury guides are written by the Ask Legal Matters editorial team. They have not been reviewed by an attorney, and each guide says so; state-law statements are checked against the statutes and official agency pages listed on each guide.
More: how Ask Legal Matters works.
What we publish
Injury law guides for 49 states and their counties and communities: filing deadlines, fault rules, insurance, where cases are filed, how to report a crash in each state, and the fatal crashes recorded in each place.
Question-and-answer guides on how injury claims work, at https://asklegalmatters.com/injury-guides/articles/, and the injury claim deadline checker at https://asklegalmatters.com/injury-guides/deadline-checker/.
Where the crash figures come from
Every fatal crash figure on our guides comes from NHTSA's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), 2020-2024 (2020: Final File; 2021: Final File; 2022: Final File; 2023: Final File; 2024: Annual Report File (ARF)). We count each crash for its county and, when the reporting agency recorded one, its city, and rank roads by the trafficway recorded.
The full figures, the method and the limits are on the crash data downloads page, as CSV files per city, county, road and state.
How to cite our figures
Cite the guide page where you read a figure. Each crash table ends with a ready-made line, for example: How to cite these figures: Ask Legal Matters, "Fatal crashes in Houston, TX, 2020-2024," compiled from NHTSA FARS (2020-2023 Final File and 2024 Annual Report File (ARF)), https://asklegalmatters.com/injury-guides/texas/houston/, checked November 3, 2026.
