Quick answer
Federal FARS records count 112 people killed in 109 fatal crashes in Hollywood, Florida, from 2020 through 2024; I-95 had the most fatal crashes, 14, then US-441 with 10 and State Route 822 with 8. Night dominates the record: 44 crashes happened between midnight and 6 a.m. and 78 after dark, and 46 involved a pedestrian, cyclist or other person outside a vehicle. Florida's no-fault rules make the injured person's own PIP coverage the first payer, and negligence claims that arose after March 24, 2023, generally must be filed within two years.
Key takeaways
- Hollywood's 112 crash deaths from 2020 through 2024, in 109 fatal crashes, rank 11th among Florida's 239 places with FARS records and are about 9 percent of Broward County's 1,298.
- Three roads account for 32 of Hollywood's 109 fatal crashes: I-95 with 14, US-441 with 10 and State Route 822 with 8.
- Forty-four fatal crashes, 40 percent, happened between midnight and 6 a.m., and 78 of the 109 happened after dark, 63 of them on lighted roads.
- Forty-six of the 112 people killed were outside a vehicle: 30 pedestrians, 10 bicyclists and 6 people on personal conveyances.
- In 37 fatal crashes the first harmful event was a collision with another vehicle in transport, meaning moving or stopped in the roadway; 17 of those were rear-end and 14 angle collisions.
- Florida requires $10,000 of personal injury protection and $10,000 of property damage coverage but no bodily-injury liability coverage, and its 51 percent bar ends a claim when the injured person was more than 50 percent at fault.

What federal crash records show for Hollywood, 2020-2024
NHTSA's Fatality Analysis Reporting System, known as FARS, is the federal census of fatal crashes. It records each crash on a public road in which someone died, with the time, place, lighting, type of collision and the people involved. For Hollywood, the files for 2020 through 2024 list 109 fatal crashes in which 112 people died. The 2020-2023 figures come from NHTSA's Final Files; the 2024 figures come from its Annual Report File, the first release for that year, and may be revised when the Final File is published.
The yearly totals moved unevenly. Hollywood recorded 23 fatal crashes in 2020, 22 in 2021, 28 in 2022, 12 in 2023 and 24 in 2024, and deaths followed the same path: 23, 23, 30, 12 and 24. The year 2023 stands out as by far the lowest, while 2024 returned to the level of 2020 and 2021, so one low year says little about a trend.
Within Broward County, which recorded 1,243 fatal crashes and 1,298 deaths over the five years, Hollywood accounts for about 9 percent of each. Florida as a whole recorded 15,959 fatal crashes and 17,131 deaths in that period. Hollywood's 112 deaths rank 11th among the state's 239 places with fatal crash records; the five highest totals belonged to Jacksonville (816), Miami (333), Tampa (317), Fort Lauderdale (222) and Orlando (219).
I-95, US-441 and State Route 822 lead Hollywood's list
I-95 had the most fatal crashes in Hollywood, 14, with 14 deaths and the latest in 2024. US-441 followed with 10 crashes and 10 deaths, also with one in 2024, and State Route 822 had 8, the latest in 2022. Those three roads account for 32 of the city's 109 fatal crashes, or 29 percent. Park Rd had 7, State Route 824 had 6, and State Route 820, US-1 and State Route 91 had 5 each.
Two rows show more deaths than crashes: State Route 820's 5 crashes killed 6 people, and Johnson St's 4 killed 5. Six of the 10 roads in the table had a fatal crash in 2024: I-95, US-441, Park Rd, State Route 824, US-1 and 56th Ave, which had 3. The latest on State Route 822, State Route 91 and Johnson St was in 2022, and on State Route 820 in 2023. These counts show where deaths occurred, not how risky each road is per mile, because FARS does not measure traffic.
When Hollywood's fatal crashes happened: after midnight, on lighted roads
Grouped into six-hour blocks, the hours after midnight were the deadliest in Hollywood: 44 of the 109 fatal crashes, 40 percent, happened between midnight and 6 a.m. Another 39 happened between 6 p.m. and midnight, so 83, or 76 percent, fell between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Daytime was far quieter, with 15 crashes between noon and 6 p.m. and 11 between 6 a.m. and noon. Saturday (22) and Sunday (21) were the deadliest days, together 43 of the 109, and Thursday had the fewest, 11.
Light conditions tell the same story. Seventy-eight crashes happened after dark: 63 on roads with street lighting, 9 on unlit roads and 6 in the dark with the lighting unknown. Only 26 happened in daylight, 4 at dusk and 1 at dawn. Most happened in clear weather, 90 of them, with 11 under clouds and only 8 in rain, so darkness, far more than weather, marks these crashes.
In 72 of Hollywood's 109 fatal crashes, the first harmful event, meaning the first event that caused injury or damage, was something other than a collision with another motor vehicle in transport, which in FARS means a vehicle moving or stopped in the roadway. Of the 37 that did begin that way, 17 were rear-end collisions, 14 angle collisions, 4 head-on and 2 same-direction sideswipes. By location, 55 crashes were coded as non-junction, meaning not at a junction, 22 were in an intersection and 22 were intersection-related. Two were at a railway grade crossing, and in 2 the first harmful event was a collision with a train or other railway vehicle.

Who was killed: 46 people outside a vehicle
Of the 112 people killed in Hollywood, 51 were drivers and 15 were passengers of vehicles in traffic. The other 46, or 41 percent, were outside a vehicle: 30 pedestrians, 10 bicyclists and 6 people on personal conveyances, FARS's term for devices such as wheelchairs, skateboards and scooters. A vehicle striking a pedestrian was the first harmful event in 26 crashes, and striking a cyclist in 10. Counted by crash rather than by person, 46 of the 109 crashes involved a pedestrian, cyclist or other person outside a vehicle.
Twenty of the people killed were riding a motorcycle or moped, 18 percent of all deaths; FARS counts them among the drivers and passengers. Sixty-four of the 109 crashes involved a single vehicle, 34 involved two and 11 involved three or more. When a pedestrian, cyclist or passenger is killed, the claim usually turns on a driver's conduct; a single-vehicle crash raises the separate question of whether anyone besides the driver, such as a vehicle manufacturer, shares responsibility.
A worked example: a rear-end crash at 1 a.m.
Suppose that in 2025 you were stopped at a red light in Hollywood at 1 a.m. when another driver hit the back of your car, the kind of collision FARS codes as front-to-rear. You broke your collarbone and needed surgery, your medical bills reached $40,000 and you missed eight weeks of work. A 2025 crash falls under the rules Florida adopted for claims arising after March 24, 2023, including the two-year deadline and the 51 percent bar. The example is hypothetical, and so is every number in it.
Your own personal injury protection, or PIP, pays first. Suppose your policy carries the Florida minimum of $10,000: it pays covered costs up to that limit no matter who caused the crash. To claim pain and suffering from the other driver, your injury would generally need to meet the serious-injury threshold in Florida's no-fault law, and the surgeon's records about lasting effects would carry weight. Suppose it does, and your losses beyond what PIP paid, pain and suffering included, are valued at $120,000.
The other driver's insurer argues that your brake lights were out and puts 25 percent of the fault on you. Under Florida's comparative fault rule, that reduces the $120,000 by a quarter, to $90,000; had you been found more than 50 percent at fault, the 51 percent bar would leave you with nothing from that driver. Florida does not require bodily-injury liability insurance, but suppose this driver carried $50,000 of it. That limit caps what the insurer pays, and the rest would have to come from other coverage or from the driver personally. If the claim did not settle, it would need to be filed in court within two years.
What to do after a crash in Hollywood
Florida law sets the first duty. The driver in a crash that injures or kills anyone, or causes apparent damage of at least $2,000 to any vehicle or property, must notify the police immediately, by the quickest means: the local police inside a city, otherwise the county sheriff or the nearest Florida Highway Patrol station. Before October 1, 2026, the damage threshold was $500. For a damage-only crash that needs no police report, the driver must send FLHSMV, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, a written self-report within 10 days on form HSMV 90011S (Fla. Stat. §§ 316.065, 316.066(1)(e)).
The rest of the first week is about evidence and coverage. Because 78 of Hollywood's 109 fatal crashes happened after dark, photos taken at the same hour, showing which street lights were working, can matter as much as photos of the cars. Tell your own insurer promptly so the PIP claim is opened, and get a medical evaluation the same day, even if you feel fine, so the records tie the injury to the crash.
- Write down the report number and the police agency that responded, and request the crash report through FLHSMV's Florida Crash Portal.
- Ask nearby businesses and homes, within days, whether any camera caught the crash.
- Mark the two-year filing deadline on a calendar, counted from the crash date.
Where a Hollywood injury case is filed, and how long you have
A lawsuit over a crash in Hollywood would generally be filed in the Broward County Circuit Court, the county's trial court of general jurisdiction, although some cases belong in another court and an attorney decides where to file. For negligence claims that arose after March 24, 2023, Florida generally allows two years to file suit (Fla. Stat. § 95.11(5)(a)). The 2023 law known as HB 837 set that period by cutting it from four years, so the date of an older crash can change the deadline that applies.
Most injury claims are resolved without a trial, but the deadline runs whether or not talks with an insurer are going well. A claim that has not settled as the date approaches is usually filed in court to keep it alive, and negotiation can continue afterward. If a crash killed someone, the family's wrongful death claim has its own deadline under Florida law: two years from the death (Fla. Stat. § 95.11(5)(e)).
When state law changes the answer
Florida changed its rules in 2023, and that matters for crash records that run from 2020 through 2024. HB 837 cut the deadline from four years to two for negligence claims that accrued, meaning arose, after March 24, 2023, and moved Florida to modified comparative negligence with a 51 percent bar: you can recover as long as you were not more than 50 percent at fault, and your award is reduced by your share of fault. For a crash on or before that date, the older period is the one to check, and an attorney should confirm which deadline applies.
Other states draw these lines differently. Alabama, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia use contributory negligence, under which an injured person found even slightly at fault can be barred from recovering at all. Florida is also a no-fault state: PIP pays first, and the law requires $10,000 of PIP and $10,000 of property damage coverage but no bodily-injury liability coverage. Claims against a Florida city, county or state agency follow their own rule: the claim must be presented in writing within 3 years, or 2 years for wrongful death (Fla. Stat. § 768.28(6)(a)).

Frequently asked questions
Is there 2025 fatal crash data for Hollywood?
Not yet in the federal data. The latest national FARS file is NHTSA's 2024 Annual Report File, its first release for that year, and the Hollywood counts for 2024 may still be revised in the Final File. NHTSA publishes each year's FARS file only after the year ends, so 2025 crashes will appear once that file is released. Check NHTSA's FARS page for the newest data.
How many people died in car crashes in Hollywood, FL, from 2020 to 2024?
FARS counts 112 deaths in Hollywood over those five years, in 109 fatal crashes. The worst year was 2022, with 30 deaths, and the lowest was 2023, with 12; 2020 and 2021 had 23 each and 2024 had 24, a first-release figure that may be revised. Pedestrians were 30 of the dead, bicyclists 10 and drivers 51, and 20 of the people killed were on a motorcycle or moped.
Which road in Hollywood has the most fatal crashes?
I-95, with 14 fatal crashes and 14 deaths from 2020 through 2024, the latest in 2024. US-441 had 10 and State Route 822 had 8. The counts show where fatal crashes were recorded, not how dangerous each road is per mile, since FARS does not measure traffic volume.
What time of day are fatal crashes most common in Hollywood?
Between midnight and 6 a.m. Forty-four of Hollywood's 109 fatal crashes from 2020 through 2024 happened in those hours, and 39 more between 6 p.m. and midnight. Seventy-eight happened after dark, 63 of them on lighted roads. Saturday, with 22, and Sunday, with 21, had the most fatal crashes of any days of the week.
How long do I have to file a car accident lawsuit in Florida?
Generally two years for a negligence claim that arose after March 24, 2023 (Fla. Stat. § 95.11(5)(a)), down from four years before HB 837. A family's wrongful death claim also has two years, counted from the death (Fla. Stat. § 95.11(5)(e)). A claim against a city, county or state agency must be presented in writing within 3 years, or 2 for wrongful death (Fla. Stat. § 768.28(6)(a)). Exceptions exist.
Do I have to report a crash in Hollywood to the police?
Yes, when anyone is injured or killed or the apparent damage to a vehicle or property is at least $2,000. Florida requires the driver to notify the police immediately by the quickest means, which inside a city means the local police (Fla. Stat. § 316.065); the threshold was $500 before October 1, 2026. A damage-only crash that needs no police report requires a written self-report to FLHSMV within 10 days.
