A crash counts for a road under the trafficway the reporting agency recorded; the same street with and without a route number is one row, a route recorded without a street name keeps its own row, and a route's ramps, frontage roads and business route have rows of their own; roads with fewer than two fatal crashes are not listed. The 2024 figures are NHTSA's first release for that year and may change in its Final File.

Boca Raton's crash count in federal records, 2020-2024
The Fatality Analysis Reporting System, or FARS, is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's census of crashes on public roads in which someone died. For Boca Raton, its 2020-2024 files hold 72 fatal crashes and 79 deaths; some crashes killed more than one person. NHTSA's Final Files supply 2020 through 2023, and the 2024 numbers come from its Annual Report File, the first release for that year, which NHTSA may revise in the Final File.
Apart from a lower 2020, the yearly count barely moved. Boca Raton recorded 11 fatal crashes in 2020, 15 in each of 2021, 2022 and 2023, and 16 in 2024. Deaths moved a little more: 12, 15, 15, 19 and 18. The year with the most deaths, 2023, was not the year with the most crashes; its 15 crashes killed 19 people, the widest gap between the two counts in any of the five years.
Palm Beach County recorded 964 fatal crashes and 1,039 deaths over the same five years, and Florida as a whole 15,959 crashes and 17,131 deaths. Boca Raton's 79 deaths put it in a tie for 17th among the Florida places in our guides: 16 places recorded more, and one other recorded the same number. The highest totals belonged to Jacksonville (816), Miami (333), Tampa (317), Fort Lauderdale (222) and Orlando (219).
I-95: 31 of Boca Raton's 72 fatal crashes
I-95 had 31 fatal crashes inside Boca Raton from 2020 through 2024, killing 34 people, with the most recent in 2024. That is 43 percent of the city's fatal crashes and 43 percent of its deaths, and more than four times the count on US-1, the next road in the table, which had 7 crashes and 7 deaths, the latest in 2023. Dixie Hwy is third with 4 crashes, but they killed 8 people, twice as many deaths as crashes, and the latest was in 2024.
The table's remaining seven rows have 2 fatal crashes and 2 deaths each: Military Trl, whose latest was in 2024; NW Spanish River Blvd and Palmetto Park Rd, latest in 2023; A1A S Ocean Blvd, State Route 794 and US-441, latest in 2022; and Jog Rd, latest in 2021. The ten rows together account for 56 of the 72 fatal crashes and 63 of the 79 deaths, so 16 crashes happened on roads outside the table.
Forty-six of the 72 crashes were coded as non-junction, meaning not at a junction such as an intersection, a driveway or a ramp, while 19 were at or related to an intersection, 5 were related to an entrance or exit ramp and 2 were elsewhere within an interchange area. Seven were coded in a work zone, 6 of an unknown type and 1 a maintenance zone. FARS coded all 72 of the city's crashes as urban.
When Boca Raton's crashes happened and how they began
No part of the day stands far apart in Boca Raton's record. Between 6 p.m. and midnight there were 22 fatal crashes, between midnight and 6 a.m. 18, between noon and 6 p.m. 17 and between 6 a.m. and noon 15. Thirty-seven happened after dark, 30 where there was lighting, 6 where there was none and 1 where the lighting was unknown; 32 happened in daylight, 2 at dawn and 1 at dusk.
Friday and Tuesday had the most fatal crashes, 12 each, followed by Saturday and Wednesday with 11 and Monday and Thursday with 9; Sunday had the fewest, 8, only four fewer than the busiest days. Clear weather was recorded for 51 crashes, clouds for 17 and rain for 4. Forty crashes involved a single vehicle, 21 involved two and 11, or 15 percent, three or more.
In 46 crashes, the first harmful event, the first event that caused injury or damage, was something other than a collision with another vehicle in transport, a FARS term covering vehicles moving or stopped in the roadway. In those crashes the first thing struck was most often a pedestrian (13), a curb (10), a concrete traffic barrier (4) or a cyclist (3). The other 26 began with a collision with a vehicle in transport: 13 angle crashes, in which one vehicle strikes another at an angle, 8 rear-end, 3 same-direction sideswipes and 2 head-on.

Who was killed in Boca Raton crashes
Drivers were 46 of the 79 people killed in Boca Raton and passengers 14. Thirteen of the dead were on a motorcycle or moped, 16 percent of all deaths; FARS counts them within the driver and passenger totals, not on top of them. Fifteen pedestrians and 3 bicyclists were killed, and 1 person who died was an occupant of a vehicle that FARS codes as not in transport, such as a parked car. By crash, 18 of the 72, exactly one in four, involved a pedestrian, cyclist or other person outside a vehicle.
Each group's claim tends to turn on different evidence. For a pedestrian or cyclist, it is where the person was, the lighting and how long the driver had to react; for a rider, usually visibility, speed and whether a driver turned or changed lanes into the motorcycle's path. A passenger is rarely blamed, so the questions are which drivers were at fault and how much insurance each carried, which in Florida, where bodily-injury liability coverage is not required, can be little or none.
A worked example: a three-car crash in slowed I-95 traffic
Every number in this example is hypothetical. Suppose that in 2025 you were in slowed traffic on I-95 in Boca Raton when the driver behind you failed to stop, struck your car and pushed it into the car ahead, a crash involving three vehicles. You fractured your wrist and hurt your neck, your medical bills came to $38,000, and you missed six weeks of work. Because the crash happened in 2025, Florida's two-year deadline and 51 percent bar apply to it.
Your personal injury protection, or PIP, pays first. With Florida's required $10,000 of PIP, your own insurer pays covered costs up to that amount whoever was at fault. Recovering pain and suffering from the driver behind you is generally possible only when the injury involves significant and permanent loss of an important bodily function, a permanent injury within a reasonable degree of medical probability (other than scarring or disfigurement), significant and permanent scarring or disfigurement, or death (Fla. Stat. § 627.737(2)), which the medical records would have to show. Suppose your injury qualifies and your losses beyond PIP, pain and suffering included, are valued at $90,000.
The rear driver's insurer argues that you stopped short and puts 20 percent of the fault on you. Under Florida's rule you can recover as long as you were not more than 50 percent at fault, with the award reduced by your share, so $90,000 becomes $72,000; at 51 percent you would recover nothing from that driver. Because Florida does not require bodily-injury liability coverage, the rear driver may carry little or none, and any shortfall would have to come from other coverage or from the driver. If the claim did not settle, it would generally have to be filed in court within two years.
What to do after a crash in Boca Raton
Florida's reporting duty applies when a crash injures or kills someone or causes apparent damage of at least $2,000 to a vehicle or other property: the driver must tell the police immediately, by the quickest means. Inside a city such as Boca Raton that is the local police; elsewhere, the county sheriff or the nearest Florida Highway Patrol station (Fla. Stat. § 316.065). The threshold was $500 until October 1, 2026. A damage-only crash that needs no police report still requires a written self-report, form HSMV 90011S, sent to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) within 10 days (Fla. Stat. § 316.066(1)(e)).
- Note the report number and the responding police agency; copies are requested through FLHSMV's Florida Crash Portal.
- If three or more vehicles were involved, record each driver's name, insurer and place in the line of cars.
- On a highway, get to a safe spot first, then photograph lane positions, debris and barrier damage.
- Tell your insurer promptly so a PIP claim is opened, and see a doctor the same day.
- For a crash after March 24, 2023, count two years from the crash date.
Where a Boca Raton injury case is filed, and the deadlines
The Palm Beach County Circuit Court is where a lawsuit over a Boca Raton crash would generally be filed, although some cases belong in another county or in federal court. Florida generally allows two years to file a negligence lawsuit that arose after March 24, 2023 (Fla. Stat. § 95.11(5)(a)). HB 837, passed in 2023, cut that period from four years, so a crash on or before that date can carry the older, longer deadline, and an attorney should confirm which one applies.
Other Florida clocks run alongside it. A family's wrongful death claim generally has two years from the death (Fla. Stat. § 95.11(5)(e)). A claim against a Florida city, county or state agency must be presented in writing within 3 years, or within 2 years for wrongful death (Fla. Stat. § 768.28(6)(a)), which matters only if a public body may share responsibility. A crash while working can bring in workers' compensation, overseen by the Florida Division of Workers' Compensation, where notice to the employer is generally due within 30 days and a claim within two years.
When state law changes the answer
In the I-95 example, Florida's rule turns a 20 percent share of fault into a $72,000 recovery and a 51 percent share into nothing. Contributory negligence, the rule in Alabama, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia, is stricter still: an injured person found even slightly at fault can be barred from recovering, so the same 20 percent could leave nothing there. Florida adopted its own 51 percent bar in 2023, under HB 837.
Florida is also one of the no-fault states, with Michigan, New York and New Jersey, where an injured person's own policy pays certain losses first, regardless of fault. Florida requires $10,000 of personal injury protection and $10,000 of property damage coverage but no bodily-injury liability coverage. Deadlines vary as well: Tennessee allows one year for most injury claims, half of Florida's two years for claims that arose after March 24, 2023.

Frequently asked questions
How many people died in car crashes in Boca Raton from 2020 to 2024?
Seventy-nine people died in 72 fatal crashes in Boca Raton over those five years, according to NHTSA's FARS data. Deaths by year were 12, 15, 15, 19 and 18 from 2020 to 2024; the 2024 count is NHTSA's first release for that year and may be revised. Fifteen of the dead were pedestrians, and 13 were on a motorcycle or moped.
Which road in Boca Raton has the most fatal crashes?
I-95, by a wide margin: 31 of Boca Raton's 72 fatal crashes from 2020 through 2024, which killed 34 people. US-1 was second with 7 crashes and Dixie Hwy third with 4, though Dixie Hwy's crashes killed 8 people. These federal FARS counts show where fatal crashes happened; they do not measure traffic or show who was at fault.
Is there 2025 fatal crash data for Boca Raton?
The national FARS series does not include 2025 yet. For Boca Raton it runs through 2024, a year with 16 fatal crashes and 18 deaths in NHTSA's Annual Report File, the agency's first release for that year, which the Final File may revise. NHTSA posts a year's file some months after the year ends, and the 2025 file will be listed on NHTSA's FARS page once it is out.
Who must report a crash in Boca Raton, and to whom?
Florida requires the driver to notify the police immediately when a crash injures or kills anyone or causes apparent damage of at least $2,000 to any vehicle or property; inside Boca Raton, that means the local police (Fla. Stat. § 316.065). The threshold was $500 before October 1, 2026. A damage-only crash that needs no police report requires a written self-report, form HSMV 90011S, to FLHSMV within 10 days.
Can I recover in Florida if I was partly at fault?
Generally yes, if you were not more than 50 percent at fault. Under the modified comparative negligence rule Florida adopted in 2023, an award is reduced by the injured person's share of fault and barred above 50 percent. With a hypothetical $100,000 in losses, 30 percent fault would leave $70,000, and 51 percent would leave nothing. An attorney must evaluate the facts of a real crash.
How long does a family have to file a wrongful death claim after a Boca Raton crash?
Generally two years from the date of death (Fla. Stat. § 95.11(5)(e)), which can be later than the crash date. If a Florida city, county or state agency may share responsibility, a wrongful death claim must be presented to it in writing within 2 years (Fla. Stat. § 768.28(6)(a)). A lawsuit over a Boca Raton crash would generally be filed in the Palm Beach County Circuit Court.
