North Carolina offers several record systems that answer different questions after an injury. NCDMV's crash-report page explains the current request routes for an individual who was involved in a collision and how privacy restrictions affect the copy supplied. City police departments may publish their own instructions for reports they prepared. A city download link and a state certified-copy process are therefore different options, not proof that the same record has the same access conditions everywhere.

For a work-related injury, the North Carolina Industrial Commission provides claim forms, an insurance-coverage search and procedural assistance for unrepresented people. Preserve notices from the employer or insurer separately from police documents. For an existing lawsuit, the Judicial Branch's court-records resources are the starting point for court information; an insurance claim number is not a court case number. Our Catawba County guide uses Hickory Police and the clerk's Newton office to illustrate local routing. When an incident is described as being near a city, record the exact address and county rather than relying on the mailing-city name. A fall, medical-treatment concern or workplace incident may involve private records that will not appear in either a police search or a public court index.

County guides explain how to distinguish local records offices. Existing city pages remain available separately; these resource hubs do not replace them.

Dedicated locality articles

All listed communities in North Carolina

The official place inventory contains 785 geographic entries in North Carolina. It includes small incorporated places and census-designated communities. A directory entry identifies a place and its statewide resource route; it does not claim that an attorney or office is based there.

Match the record to the accident

A traffic report, an employer incident report, a property owner’s report and a medical record are different documents. Start with the organization that created the record. Do not assume a statewide agency holds every local file.

  • Car, truck, motorcycle, pedestrian and bicycle collisions: identify the responding law-enforcement agency and report number.
  • Slip, trip and fall incidents: retain the exact property location and any report made to the owner or manager.
  • Work-related injuries: keep the employer notice and claim correspondence separate from a safety complaint.
  • Medical care concerns: list providers and treatment dates so records requests go to the correct custodian.

Before discussing your injury inquiry

Write a short timeline, preserve original documents and identify gaps rather than filling them with guesses. A government record is information, not a promise that a legal claim exists. Ask a lawyer licensed in the appropriate state about deadlines, who may bring a claim and whether the facts support representation. The office that maintains a record cannot choose your legal strategy.
