Virginia DMV provides a records gateway with a separate police crash-report service. An individual report, a driver's history and a new crash notification serve different purposes, so identify the record needed before ordering. Keep the incident date, exact location, investigating agency and available reference number together. A municipal police department may offer another route for the report it prepared.
The Workers' Compensation Commission's injured-worker page expressly distinguishes notifying an employer from filing a claim with the Commission. Preserve both the employer communication and Commission correspondence rather than assuming one reference proves both steps occurred. Virginia's Judicial System provides court and case-service information for existing proceedings. Local geography also matters: Virginia has independent cities as county equivalents, and a city incident should not automatically be routed to a neighboring county clerk. Our Staunton guide uses that distinction to separate city police and Circuit Court services. For falls, work events or suspected treatment negligence, identify private employer, property and provider records independently of public files. A review inquiry can describe missing documents, but cannot calculate individual deadlines, select a court or guarantee attorney acceptance.

The official place inventory contains 700 geographic entries in Virginia. It includes small incorporated places and census-designated communities. A directory entry identifies a place and its statewide resource route; it does not claim that an attorney or office is based there.

A traffic report, an employer incident report, a property owner’s report and a medical record are different documents. Start with the organization that created the record. Do not assume a statewide agency holds every local file.
- Car, truck, motorcycle, pedestrian and bicycle collisions: identify the responding law-enforcement agency and report number.
- Slip, trip and fall incidents: retain the exact property location and any report made to the owner or manager.
- Work-related injuries: keep the employer notice and claim correspondence separate from a safety complaint.
- Medical care concerns: list providers and treatment dates so records requests go to the correct custodian.
Before discussing your injury inquiry
Write a short timeline, preserve original documents and identify gaps rather than filling them with guesses. A government record is information, not a promise that a legal claim exists. Ask a lawyer licensed in the appropriate state about deadlines, who may bring a claim and whether the facts support representation. The office that maintains a record cannot choose your legal strategy.
